1933 Germany vs. 2009 Israel

“The ‘main surprise’ of the recent Israeli elections Avigdor Lieberman is a man who really has much in common with Adolph Hitler.”

By Khalid Amayreh

Journalist — Occupied Palestine
Editor’s note: The rise of the rightwing in Israel through the recent Knesset elections that was preceded by the bloody war on Gaza — which left more than 1,300 dead most of them are women and children — has aroused a lot of criticism among Palestinians. Khalid Amayreh opines about the rise of Lieberman.

In the early 1930s, many in Germany saw the Nazis as the wave for the future. Thousands of new members joined the Nazi party, giving absolute allegiance to the Fuhrer, Adolph Hitler. In the spring of 1932, with six million unemployed, chaos in Berlin, starvation and ruin as well as the threat of Marxism, and a very uncertain future, the masses turned to Hitler by the millions.

In the German presidential elections, which took place on March 13, 1932, Hitler received over 11 million votes or 30 percent of the total. His opponent, President Hindenburg, received more than 18 million votes or 49 percent.

With Hindenburg failing to get the absolute majority he needed, Hitler seized the opportunity and immediately embarked on a frantic campaign, arousing national feelings and promising something for everyone. In the Third Reich, he said, every German girl would find a husband.

In a televised speech on Saturday, Khaled Meshaal, the exiled-Hamas political leader, said Israel’s offensive on Gaza, which has killed more than 850 Palestinians, had failed because Hamas was still firing rockets at Israel.

“You have finished off the last chance and breath for settlement and negotiations,” Meshaal said.

Israel has been trying rather frantically to convince the international community that its ongoing campaign of death and terror against the Gaza Strip is actually in response to the firing by Palestinian fighters of largely ineffective, homemade projectiles on nearby Israeli settlements.

Gaza’s Traumatized Children

By Sameh A. Habeeb, IOL Correspondent

GAZA CITY — Having nowhere to hide even inside UN-run schools, the latest Israeli target, more than 215 children have been killed so far in Israel’s ongoing military offensive against the sealed off Gaza Strip.

But for many, that’s not the worst part of the nightmare.

Having lost a father, mother, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, friend or neighbor, about every child in the bombed-out costal enclave has been traumatized and will keep physical and mental scars for years.

IslamOnline.net has interviewed several children to talk about their feelings regarding Israeli onslaught.

Huda, 7

I hate this war and I hear that Israel will come to our house soon.

I always get nightmares of rockets hitting my house. I dreamt of my father being killed by one of the rockets and my mother got her neck racked.

In the nightmare, I was searching for my brothers who were taken far away by the Israeli tanks.

I’m unhappy and I want to play again in my house. I hope no bad things happen.

Abed, 3
I don’t like darkness. It’s when the sounds of bad things come out.

    • Does Israel seek War or Peace? June 3, 2011
Gaza, (Pal Telegraph) - Successive Israeli governments have failed to achieve peace with the Palestinians. The reasons were sometimes vague, while in other times they were crystal clear. It was after the killing of Yitzhak Rabin that a lack of vision became dominant in the Israeli political arena and Israeli erosion of that which he agreed upon in Oslo. Vari […]
